“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment” – Matthew 22:37-38
We are told to love. More than that, we are
commanded to love. To love God. Easier said than done, right? The first thing we need to know about love, is that the movies are wrong. Love is not an emotion that comes and goes without our control. Love does not come on a whim, only to flee just as quickly. Love is a choice.
Love is an action, a decision, an achievable goal. Choose to love God, and work towards that goal. The first step towards that goal is to know God. It is very hard to love someone you don’t know, and God makes Himself knowable. He is relational. So, how do you get to know Him.
1. Talk to Him
Every day. Every chance you get. Talk to Him.
Pray in the morning when you wake up. Pray throughout the day. Pray before you go to bed. He is your Father. He loves you. He wants to know all about you. It doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t need to be some grandiose spiritually deep prayer. It can start with “Hey God! What up?”. Don’t be self-conscious. Don’t worry about saying the wrong thing. Just talk to Him, as much as you can.
2. Listen to Him
God has 3 ways of speaking to us on a daily basis: Scripture, Other people, and His still small voice.
Scripture is the written word of God. Read it. Listen to it (audio books are amazing!!). Everyday, take some time and read God’s letter to you.
Have you been going about your day and had someone say something, out of nowhere, that was exactly what you needed to hear in that moment? Have you ever had a subject, a saying, an idea come up over and over again? God is saying something. Maybe it’s time to listen.
He also as that still small voice. So quiet you have to listen vary closely. You know it when you hear it. It is sweet, and tender, and full of wisdom. Just Listen.
3. Serve Him
A great way to know and love God, is to serve Him by helping others. Observe his handiwork first hand. There are so many areas you can work to help others in need. Work in the church, get involved in a ministry, or serve your neighbors. I personally love volunteering. Find a local women’s or homeless shelter (They always need help). Find a food bank. Or a disaster relief team. Maybe you can’t do something consistently, but you can go on a mission trip or help with a seasonal outreach. A good friend of mine buys stocking stuffers all year long for shoe boxes at Christmas time. The options are everywhere, and the learning opportunities are never ending. Serve God by helping others, and you get to know Him well.
Love God with your heart, soul, and mind. Know Him by communicating with Him. Love is an achievable goal. Work to achieve it, and your relationship will grow.
